De Plasma Protein Therapeutics Association (PPTA) is ontstaan vanuit de International Plasma Products Industry Association (IPPIA) in 1992. Opgericht met als primaire doelstelling op te treden als vertegenwoordiger van de plasma industrie. De organisatie begon met een Europese divisie in 1994 genaamd the European Association of the Plasma Products Industry (EAPPI). In 1998 werd IPPIA North America opgericht. In 2000, zijn EAPPI and IPPIA samengegaan als de Plasma Protein Therapeutics Association (PPTA). In 2002, is PPTA gefuseerd met ABRA (voorheen de American Blood Resources Association) en daarmee kwam de PPTA Source Division tot stand.

PPTA Source is de erkende autoriteit voor de Source Plasma Collection Industry en heeft voor toegevoegde waarde gezorgd voor patienten, industrie, donoren, klanten en overheidsinstellingen. Industrie standaarden, zoals opgenomen in het International Quality Plasma Program (IQPP) vormen de basis waarop de plasma industrie een reputatie heeft opgebouwd voor kwaliteit, veiligheid en integriteit.

PPTA is gevestigd in Amerika, Europa en Japan.
